PS/SS- Harry is with Hagrid when he takes a small package from Gringotts. At the time Harry doesn't know what it is, but it ends up being the Sorcerers Stone, the object he (Harry) must fight Lord Voldemort for.
CoS- Harry is in Diagon Alley when Lucius Malfoy slips an old diary into Ginny's cauldron. Not something of great importance, until Harry finds out that the sixteen year old Tom Riddle is possessing Ginny through this book. Again, this leads to Harry having to fight not only a school-aged Voldemort, but also a full-grown basilisk.
PoA- Harry sees a big, black dog, which he later believes to be the grim. At the end of the book though, Harry finds out that this is his godfather, Sirius Black. He then has to go back in time to save Sirius from the dementor's kiss.
GoF- This book starts of with the dream that tells Harry that Voldemort is planning on returning, but that is more of an obvious hint. What we do not think about until the end is the portkey. This is used in order for the Weasleys, Diggorys, and Harry to get to the Quidditch World Cup. Later though, this is what leads to Cedric's death and Voldemort's return to power.
OoTP- On his way to his hearing, Harry notices the Department of Mysteries. At the time he thinks nothing of it, but this is where the DA gets its first chance to fight and where Sirius dies.
So, what does this have to do with Hufflepuff? Well, I believe that this house is going to have the same role as these other items. All of these items start out small and unimportant and none of them seem glamorous at all. But they end up being incredibly important. Well, in case you hadn't noticed, J.K. has worked really hard to make us see Hufflepuff as the mediocre house, the one for people who don't belong anywhere else. She starts by having Malfoy tell us that he'd rather leave Hogwarts than be in Hufflepuff. She doesn't let us see their Quidditch team win until the third book, and even then it's only because Harry fell off of his broom. Then she gives them glory by having the school champion come from Hufflepuff, but then he's killed. The sorting hat changes it's story from Hufflepuff being about hard work, loyalty, and justice to being the house that will take everyone. The only reason I can see for putting this much effort into making a house seem like nothing special is that she wants to surprise us by having the Hufflepuffs do something incredible. As I said earlier, this may be a biased opinion, but I can't help seeing Hufflepuff as that small package wrapped in ordinary paper or the beat up diary. I don't know what their role will be, but I have a feeling that Hufflepuff will have a big part in helping defeat Lord Voldemort.
